The new cycle “Innovation Cycle Stepping Out – Civil Engineering on Display” begins with the presentation of the Matadouro de Campanhã

On 28 September, the proposal for M-ODU was unveiled—an ambitious project aimed at revitalising the former Matadouro de Campanhã and transforming it into a dynamic cultural hub. Currently undergoing rehabilitation, this space will bring together various infrastructures, including offices, a museum, a municipal art gallery, and a new Police Station.
Diogo Brito, the architectural designer from OODA Architecture, and Miguel Mariz, the engineering designer from A400, emphasised that the Matadouro de Campanhã aims to be an innovative space that fosters interaction among family and friends, enhancing social engagement. Described as a “challenge for engineering,” the project seeks to harmonise tradition and modernity by preserving the existing structure while incorporating new features, such as an innovative roof and a pedestrian bridge.
“It is a unique project that we want to transform into a welcoming space while preserving its own identity,” stated Diogo Brito, highlighting the crucial role of this development in revitalising the local community. “This is a distinctive space. We immersed ourselves in the Slaughterhouse and made the most of the best that the infrastructure has to offer,” added Rita Topa, partner of the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma (Kengo Kuma and Associates), who was invited to collaborate with OODA Architecture in designing and conceptualising the project.
After the conference, that was moderated by Cláudia Fonseca (Department of Civil Engineering at FEUP), more than 50 participants had the opportunity to visit and closely observe the innovations implemented in this renovated infrastructure, which promises to have a significant impact on Porto’s cultural and artistic scene.
The activity “Innovation Cycle Stepping Out – Civil Engineering on Display” aims to showcase the scientific and technological knowledge that underpins many of Porto’s most iconic and essential projects and infrastructures. Is led by the Municipality of Porto as part of the Porto Innovation Hub, in close collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.
The next session will take place on 23 November and will focus on the Parque da Alameda de Cartes. Participation in the sessions is free of charge, subject to prior registration, and limited to the event’s capacity.
